We are in Palermo for most of the summer holidays. The plan is quite simple - to enjoy the sun and the sea, spend time with family and get to know a new puppy Bombay :-)

3 reasons to have your family photos in Villa Giulia park

Villa Giulia is a park in historic center of Palermo. It has its origins in 18th century and is remarkable for its perfect square shape with diagonal alleys dividing the park in different sections. Marble statues and fountains, a sundial, shady alleys and open spaces, and wide variety of trees and shrubbery make it a popular spot both with locals and tourists.  If you'd like your family photos to have lush green background with a touch of special Sicilian atmosphere, this park definitely should be considered. It ticks all the boxes - plenty of space, nice surroundings, easy access, lots of options for things to do during your photo shoot to get natural and emotional images (anyway we don't do posed photos on the benches or next to flowering shrubs!).  Here are my top 3 reasons why villa Giulia is a great location for family photo sessions. Sand castles on East Sands

First barefoot beach day (we do not really count those short runs on the sand in February, right :-) Really and seriously, with feet dipping and running on the water - this one is the first. First sand castle of the season. First sand fight of the season and first hand full of sand - this, and sand in the pockets, will stay with us well till November. And I truly do not mind, I love my barefoot beach days as much as these two. Matteo is building a bunker - tunnel covered with sticks and sea-weed, then with sand. Good camouflage, it was hardly different from the rest of the surface around the castle. He tested it after completing the construction - the structure resisted his weight and survived. One very proud engineer. We tried to build the moat too - it did not really work, water was too far. So it was abandoned after a short while. Maya was collecting small rocks and shells to decorate the walls and the big tower. They both carried big rocks to reinforce the wall...

Outdoor baby photo session in St Andrews | East Sands and St Andrews Cathedral

Preparation As both parents are history lovers and always try to visit and explore historic places when travelling, St Andrews Cathedral seemed to be an obvious location choice, followed by a quick trip to East Sands beach and the pier, so that we had more diversity in the scenery. We spoke on the phone to sort out all the details to plan the session so that it's also enjoyable for them and manageable with their little baby girl. I was a bit worried to have an outdoor photo session in winter with such a young baby (she was about 2 months old when we did the photos), but she did so well! She liked our time on the beach much more than the Cathedral ruins, probably because we walked more there and she could sleep cuddled in her mommy's or daddy's arms. The weather's been a gift too, we had a lovely warm day which did not feel like winter at all and beautiful golden sunlight. Saying goodbye to St Andrews, family photo session on East Sands

I've had several shoots lately with families who are moving from St Andrews and who wanted to have family photos in their favourite places around the town. It's always bittersweet to say goodbye to the town you grew to love, while looking forward to the new beginnings and adventures. This is what we did one summer evening in July, we met on East Sands to take some photos on the beach, the pier and around the Cathedral ruins. We timed it for the low tide - East Sands gets really small during high tide so there is not much space to run and play.  We took photos outside of the Cathedral - to avoid crowded and very touristic looking shots. It's surrounded with lovely green grass, grown quite high in that time, high grass always makes beautiful backdrop with its colour and texture. Kids loved to play and goof around in it, as well as on the ruins close to the Cathedral walls. Family photo session in Villa Tasca, Palermo

We met with Greta and her parents on summer evening in July for their family photos. I've photographed this family several times already, first when Greta was a a baby, and it always touches me deeply when families come for a repeat shoot. We picked villa Tasca park because they often spend summer evenings there, so Greta knows and loves the park and has several favourite spots there. As her mom told me that she's very much into exploring and researching now, I offered to bring a little basket and magnifying glass for her research. They also brought some books and a blanket to sit on. We started with one of their favourite spots - tree stumps and hammocks. There was a game of sticks, drumming, bouncing and jumping on the stumps, rocking on the hammock with some tickles.  I saw some interesting looking bushes with blooms and beautiful light, so I suggested we move there and let Greta play with magnifying glass. Photo albums

These beauties have arrived with the post today.  Putting last finishing touches - wrapping them and decorating with cuttings from my garden to give to  my lovely clients. Today's decorations are mint, rosemary, ivy and pink armeria. Such album takes work and time to create, it is custom made and designed specifically with your photos and ideas. It's the most popular product with my clients, often ordered in more than one copy as gift for grandparents or other family members. Beautiful way to enjoy all photos from your photo-session (and sometimes more than one!) in printed and physical form. The album comes also as pdf version, which can be used as e-book on your tablet. Can be a handy if you wish to protect the original from little often dirty fingers, or creative minds armed with crayons :-).

Christmas Family Photo Hunt

Christmas family photo hunt! I've prepared a little game that you can play with your kids and the whole family over Christmas break, and share results with friends and family who you cannot see in person. You can take photos together, your kids can take some of the photos too. No camera or special equipment needed - you can do it all with your phone camera. The list of ideas included in the photo hunt is also open to your interpretation - for instance cookies you can make or eat, can be just cookies or your child dipping them in milk! Photo a day with baby Mara - April

Published on 15th of May 2021     Here's next update and next portion of photos from my 'a photo a day' project. Mara is doing well and we are slowly switching back to nursing, so midnight pumping sessions are almost over and I won't miss them. We've mastered tummy time and she loves when her older siblings talk to her or read her stories. She tries to talk back too - we hear lots of oooo and aaaa, and she is very generous with her toothless smiles. Grabbing everything is another skill she is mastering - fingers, noses and hair, or anything else she finds close around her. Outdoor walks are also much easier now as we only need to plan feeding time, without pumping and carrying all sorts of equipment it involves. Mara is mostly travelling around in a baby bag, something we've done with her siblings and continued using with her. With the baby bag we can easily go to the beach or coastal path, or any other walk we feel like doing without having concerns about the ...

How to select outfits for family photos at home

Dressing your family for photos is often challenging, and even more so when the photo session takes place at your home. At home sessions usually are reserved for newborns and babies, but there are so many reasons for doing at home shoot with kids of any age! Everybody feels more comfortable at home, you don't need to worry about carrying extra clothes or shoes in case someone gets messy and needs a change. You have all your favourite books and activities right at hand. Having photo session at home is also a deeper insight into your family and your life. Choose colours that you like looking at, because they will remain on the photos for a long time. Start with picking your palette of 3-4 general tones - for instance greys, pastels and earth tones etc. Then select clothes which fit with the chosen colour palette. We are moving!

It's been a quiet time online for me lately, because something big has been going on offline. And now it's time to announce it! After 10 years in Scotland, we are moving to Italy, Palermo will be our new hometown.  Saying goodbye to Scotland is bittersweet. The people, our favourite places, trips to Highlands, the school, strawberries - so many memories and ties, photos and emotions. It's not a goodbye, we will be back! Like what I do?
