First weeks with baby Mara

It's been quiet here since our newest arrival, I did not have much time for working on photos and posting updates. One would think, with baby #4 things should be easy and everything should be known and familiar. Nope, wrong. This one came with a whole bag of surprises, so we are slowly rediscovering all the baby tricks, and getting to know this little person. The easy bit - she sleeps. The difficult bit - she sleeps and falls asleep easily, and does not have the energy to nurse. Combined with her small size and weight, it is an issue. We had to start using the bottle and even formula every now and then, to be sure she is not hungry and is growing well. She does. So I'm pumping her milk and she's bottle fed for now. I hope as she gets a bit stronger we can switch to breastfeeding, pumping milk in the middle of the night is not a favourite activity. I am not going to pretend, I am tired, and worried. I want to make breastfeeding work, and be sure she's doing well and growing. But for now I have to pump, and do it frequently - so every time Mara wakes for a bottle, I am pumping. Naps during day time are nice and good - when possible, and having kids who are older also makes things a bit easier. I am just doing my best to roll with it and hope we'll be able to breastfeed soon and worry less about weight and growth charts.

The favourites from these weeks - all the baby cuddles. Maya is the first one in line, always ready and eager to hold her baby sister while we cook or do things around the house, or shower :) (this is important too!). The big brother is more cautious and very careful, but something tells me they will make quite a trouble team in the future. It's a gift on its own to observe the older ones with the baby.

Another big difference this time around is the pandemic - we had to self-isolate for two weeks right after Mara's arrival, and while it was nice to be in our own bubble, things have also been tricky. We discovered our baby clothes were all too big, and some other supplies were needed - big thanks to all our friends who stepped in to help! Introducing Mara to friends and family also mostly happened via video and some brief 'hello' at the doorstep, and we can only guess when grandparents would be able to meet her in person, due to all the restrictions.

Last but not least - I've decided to start 'a photo a day' project, to last a year - and then we'll see, I might continue :). My whole journey in photography has started because I wanted to document my kids growing up, so now with the new baby in the family it felt like the right thing.
