Clothes, colours, choices / Family photographer in St Andrews



Clothes are.. .well, clothes. They are a daily necessity, they reflect our personality.

And clothes are crucial for the photos to turn out great - imagine the two children above wearing say stripy leggins and pink Peppa Pig dress and orange skirt with pink polka dot shorts. Won't be exactly the same, right?

I've put together some tips and ideas here to make it easier for you to decide on your wardrobe for the photo session.

Choose colours that you like looking at, because they will remain on the photos for a long time. Pick up to 4 main colours which coordinate. Everybody should not wear same colours, but the colours should look good together.

Colours should not be bright - it is distracting in the photos, we want the focus to be you and your beautiful smiles!

Try to pick clothes which are smart and look classic, again because the photos will make a memory for a long time.

Avoid too many patterns, big patterns, characters and printed logos on t-shirts. They are distracting especially in group photos.

Make-up does not need to be more or darker/brighter colors than usual.

Accessories like scarf or hat or necklace add nice detail to photos, so if you have a favourite piece that suits the idea and location where we do photos - take it.

Outdoor family portraits with baby - Capo Gallo, Palermo

This photo-session has been kept under wraps for a while because the photos were Christmas gift, presented as gorgeous custom-made album. That's why now in the middle of winter I am posting some warm and sunny summer photos. This baby stage when they sit but cannot yet walk, is absolutely adorable to photograph. Your little one is so expressive and active, yet mostly sits still - making it an easy job for both the parents and photographer :-). I do not recommend to have only outdoor sessions with young babies, before they master sitting, especially in colder seasons. Warmth and quiet of home create better atmosphere for young babies, to capture simple moments of life, holding and comforting your little one, and all the sweet details. When they confidently master sitting and first steps - then its perfect time for outdoor family photos. Family photo session in St Andrews, West Sands beach

West Sands did not disappoint - beautiful dunes, moody sky, wind. But then, it very seldom does, especially if you do not mind the wind. We met on a beautiful September evening for this photoshoot with Marion and her daughters. Our destination was the very end of the beach, by the Eden estuary and sand dunes. Marion picked some flowers and decorated Keira's curls, girls shared some secrets and treasures found in the sand, wind was playing with Keira's hair. And me - I was observing it all as it unfolded in front of me, and clicking along. I often tell my clients that photo-session is like going for a walk together - this one was no exception. I am a very silent companion on such a walk - I might suggest something interesting if I see beautiful spot or some nature details that would make beautiful background for you. Photo a day - September and October

Published on 17th of October 2022     This one is a bit strange mix of photos. As I opted to make separate posts about the sea and our travels in Scotland, this is what remained, mostly from home, a lot about food - water melon, plums, grapes, apples, figs, pears, yoghurt, pasta. Ice-cream is missing, I should work on that. I have quite a collection of her eating, probably deserves a separate post at this point. Mara is all about food, tasting new things, asking to share, trying to eat on her own. Fork is easy for her, spoon less so, and depending on food. Both easily result in lots of mess - part of the story though. These past weeks have been slow - settling into the new routine of back to school and weekends after long summer break is always a challenge. Waiting for the change of season, for autumn that forgot it's already October and we are still in t-shirts and flipflops here with occasional dip in the sea. Very windy evening / Family photographer in St Andrews

It was windy. So windy that we had to cut it short and run away. The little one did not like the wind, and I totally agree with her opinion. How to select outfits for family photos at home

Dressing your family for photos is often challenging, and even more so when the photo session takes place at your home. At home sessions usually are reserved for newborns and babies, but there are so many reasons for doing at home shoot with kids of any age! Everybody feels more comfortable at home, you don't need to worry about carrying extra clothes or shoes in case someone gets messy and needs a change. You have all your favourite books and activities right at hand. Having photo session at home is also a deeper insight into your family and your life. Choose colours that you like looking at, because they will remain on the photos for a long time. Start with picking your palette of 3-4 general tones - for instance greys, pastels and earth tones etc. Then select clothes which fit with the chosen colour palette. Outdoor family portraits on the beach - summer in Scotland

I love small beaches off Coastal Path, just a short walk from East Sands, and I used them a number of times already for family photo sessions. There are barely other people here, so you have the whole space to yourself. No need to worry about your kids getting a bit wild and disturbing the others, or that you have to wait and check that nobody else gets in accidentally in your family photos. There is also beautiful variety of natural textures and backgrounds - sand, water and rocks, greenery of the path on the way to the beach.  This family shoot was the last one in 'baby's first year package' we did with Francina and her twins, Lily and Elanor. As we already knew each other, and the kids were comfortable with me too - no ice-breaking was needed. In fact, we started taking photos already on the way to the beach! At the harbor

St Andrews has a harbor, and there is even a lighthouse. Not a large and fancy-looking one, it is more like a large torch, but it is there. We continued to East Sands beach and with its playground and nice green area for running and rolling in the grass. We found a dandelion, the poor thing has missed its season. Matteo had its way with it :-)

No War

Hello. It's been a while, and this is not how I envisaged my return to social media. The world is just not the same since Feb 24th. A planned short break while we were moving and settling in had to be stretched and extended to deal with all the challenges, which now seem so petty and insignificant. And almost every day I think, it's horrible and we've seen it all already, we just need to learn to live with it and carry on somehow, and Ukraine will win - then comes another horrendous piece of news, another blow that steals your breath away, another unthinkable evil. It hurts to see all this destruction, evil and death. I don't want to see Russian tanks in my home town. I don't want to see more people die. No War. Peace for Ukraine.

It's that time of the year - bright spots of colour are appearing on the trees, morning school runs call for warmer scarves and jackets, and shops start taking out their Christmas goodies. Soon our walks will include making crowns of leaves and collecting the biggest and brightest ones for the flower press. This season is the sunset of the year, time to reflect on how it was and what's happened and what you want to take with you in the future.
